The Opportunity

BV are growing our UK based team due to demand and we are now seeking a Lead Electrical & Grid Engineer to join our Glasgow office, to manage the electrical and grid capability that supports a variety of projects within the UK and wider EMEA region.

The successful candidate will function as a technical specialist in the field of electrical engineering and will supervise and manage a growing team of Electrical Engineers. The role will provide leadership and technical direction to our global design teams who produce drawings, SLDs, studies, reports and more.

As the Lead Electrical & Grid Engineer you will be responsible for managing EMEA resources to ensure project design requirements are met, to interface with clients and to keep the delivery schedule on track. Key areas you will support are wind, Solar PV and BESS and other renewables, focusing on balance of plant, grid connection and transmission infrastructure. Your expertise will support business development and pursuits such as contributing to bids and proposals, as well as the tendering process for EPC contracts. Mentorship and development of a team of Electrical Engineers, including our UK based graduate Electrical Engineers, will be a further aspect of the role.

We are also open to applications from candidates who would prefer to be based in our central London office. You must be able to commute to the office 3 days per week and have the legal right to work in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

• Serves as a technical specialist, providing consultation and guidance to project teams, and leads the EMEA Electrical Engineering team, including overseas design offices.

• Interpreting, applying, and providing direction for complex engineering deliverables. Typically supports multiple projects on complex technical challenges.

• Researches and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.

• Ensures policies, procedures, and processes are effectively developed, implemented, and communicated.

• Supports project team in the identification of key client interests and drivers on projects.

• Oversees collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work

• Responsible for the development and/or approval of complex engineering calculations.

• Manages assigned budget, schedule and quality requirements.

• Focusing on the Electrical Engineering staff, liaises with the EMEA Resource Manager to:

o oversee performance management, career planning, recognition, learning and development; and to

o participate in succession planning, employee relations and workforce & resource planning.

• Coordinates with global Electrical discipline leadership to:

o Balance EMEA Electrical staff needs and global supporting staff needs for projects in EMEA

o Identify staff development needs while leveraging global subject matter expertise within Black & Veatch to optimize electrical qualifications and knowledge sharing.

Management Responsibilities

Supervises work of others. Responsible for hiring, discipline, and pay administration of their subordinates.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or equivalent experience.

• Proven track record leading a team of engineers.

• Sounds understanding of UK Grid Code and relevant regulations, with significant experience on UK electrical engineering projects.

• Experience with high voltage (HV) electrical engineering and balance of plant (LV/MV) electrical engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Solar, Wind and BESS Projects.

• Experience in electrical generation, transmission / distribution systems and Grid Code regulations and compliance processes.

• Experience interfacing with DNOs and confident engaging with clients.

• Has worked on AIS or GIS 220 kV and above.

• HV Substation Primary design experience.

• Protection & Control design experience.

• Experience in preparation of SCADA and Telecom architecture.

• Transmission Line & EHV Cable knowledge.

• Industry knowledge and technology trends.

• Knowledge of construction & constructability practices & principles.

• Knowledge of procurement & contract administration.

• Working knowledge of process, procedures for project controls and estimating.

• Intermediate knowledge of technical aspects of the proposal process.

• Knowledge on clearances for the substations designs, CT and PT sizing calculation, Lightning arrestor, Grounding calculations, DG Sizing.

• Conversant with sizing calculation for transformers along with Electrical system modelling / studies.
